Local spirits tasting specialist, Azu Spirits, and the Cridford Inn, a pub restaurant based in the Teign Valley, launched their first Whisky Club Series on 1st September. A monthly whisky series exploring the histories, culture and production of single malt Scotch, with a new theme and six unique malts to explore every month. The tastings, accompanied with food pairings from the Cridford’s award-winning restaurant, are centred around blind tasting and include challenges and prizes.

Their next tasting event is scheduled for 7pm on Thursday 6th October and explores peat in Scotch whisky. Including peated and unpeated expressions from the Bruichladdich and Springbank distilleries in addition to Glen Moray Peated and Glenfiddich Fire & Cane, guests have the opportunity to ‘challenge’ their palate through the blind tasting and can try to identify which whiskies comes from the same distillery.

The Whisky Club includes a Burns Night Special finale which hosts a raffle to win whisky prizes and local experiences. For £10, guests can become Club Members and receive a Glencairn nosing glass, a personal discount code to Azu’s website and a free 30ml miniature whisky of their choice to take away from each tasting event they attend. Whisky Club Members will also be given a raffle ticket for the prize giveaways at the Burns Night Special.

Each tasting event will be £35 per person, with discounted packages available for guests wanting to attend the whole series.

For those that can’t attend, Azu offers a ‘host-your-own’ option that’s available from their website and provides a complete blind tasting experience for 5-6 people.

Young superstar at Deer Park Country House Wins Chaine De Rotisseurs GB Young Chef of the Year Award 2018!

Exeter-born, Kayla Tuvey (19), is the youngest chef (and possibly the first woman) in 41 years to win the title of Chaîne des Rôtisseurs GB Young Chef of the Year 2018 and is off to Taiwan in September for the international finals!

Testing their creativity and practical talent, the chef finalists were asked to cook a three-course meal for four in 3.5 hours, using compulsory ingredients notified beforehand, and enhanced by a ‘mystery box’ opened at the start of the cook-off in the kitchens of Lainston House Cookery School, outside Winchester. Each dish was then judged against strict criteria of taste, presentation and originality.

Kayla’s winning menu packed a punch with the judges to clinch first place in these prestigious awards. Kayla said she has been inspired by the flavours she had experimented with during the eighteen months she had been at Deer Park Country House. Originally trained at Exeter College’s apprentice scheme, she had been ‘talent spotted’ by Deer Park’s MD Mark Godfrey while working on a Chaîne dinner at the Exeter Cookery School.

As the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs GB Young Chef of the Year 2018, Kayla now goes forward to represent Great Britain in the organisation’s International Finals taking place in Taiwan from 4th to 9th September. To help her prepare, she wins a stage at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London, work experience at Anton Mosimann’s prestigious London club, and a week in one of Holland’s top Michelin starred hotels, De Bloemenbeek.

Commenting on her success, she said: ‘It is absolutely amazing – I still can’t really believe it! It is a very great honour to represent my country in Taiwan, and it will even more special as it falls on my twentieth birthday!

The winning line up was announced at a glittering ceremony at the Dorchester, Park Lane on Friday 23rd March, attended by many well-known names in Hospitality including judges Al Crisco, Daniel Ayton and Bob Hughes. At the Awards Ceremony, Philip Evins, Bailli Délégué for the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs said:

“The young talent that we have in the UK has never been stronger and we believe it vital to support and develop skills and techniques that help us ‘futureproof’ the Hospitality Industry as consumers look for new inspiration and experiences.

“The Chaîne des Rôtisseurs’ Young Chef Competition was developed to support rising young stars and give them a platform to showcase their skill and passion for the industry. However, it also goes beyond this; it gives them the chance to compete against their international peers – a hugely beneficial learning experience that will help allow them to maintain a profile on a global stage throughout their career and support their broader development”.

Vic Laws MBE, who runs the competition on behalf of Chaine GB, concluded: “I would like to congratulate all three finalists on their fantastic achievements so far as each one has demonstrated impressive technical ability and creativity.”

Steak, seafood and cocktails at Circa 1924

Circa 1924, a new restaurant located just off Exeter High Street at 6 Northernhay Place, is set to take the city’s culinary scene by storm with its 1920s-inspired steak and seafood house and ‘moonshiner’ speakeasy cocktail bar.

Formerly Harry’s Grill Bar, Circa 1924 is owned by two local lads, Rob Weeks and James Waddington, who searched for months for premises that would allow them to combine their love of food and drink in a building with a vintage twist.

James explains: “After both spending time living away from the area, we couldn't help but notice that our hometown needed to recapture its culinary soul. We wanted to create a place that rivals our favourite haunts in Bristol and London and our aim is to create a venue where diners are guaranteed an unforgettable experience.”

“We opened our doors in June and have been working hard to make sure we offer the best food and drink, both in terms of choice and quality, backed up with great service. The feedback we have had from customers so far is really encouraging, with 97% of our reviews on Facebook a fantastic five out of five,” adds Rob.

Swedish head chef, Lauri Hilli, says: “The restaurant really celebrates great produce and our menu is all about using the best ingredients. Our fish is sourced locally and is served up fresh from Brixham harbour – with our fried oysters a favourite accompaniment to after-works cocktails. We are so excited to be serving Longhorn beef, which is mouthwatering and of Michelin-star pedigree.”

The kitchen team also makes sure to update its menu according to the season, with catch of the day, seasonal dishes and complementary accompaniments.

Rob and James have also introduced an element of sharing to the menu, with whole joints and sides available at Sunday lunchtime for up to four people – a great alternative to cooking at home. Sharing joints include favourites such as Chateaubriand, and this month, Lauri has also introduced a Scandinavian summertime favourite; whole Crayfish accompanied by shots of fiery Schnapps.

Lauri has previously owned restaurants in Sweden, Finland and London, and his experience, particularly with seafood, is apparent in the quality of the food that leaves the kitchen. The unflappable Swede also brings a fresh angle to the simple and classic menu. In the bar, mixologist, Jackson Cleary Herbert, serves up classic cocktails and Circa creations, as well as customers’ off-menu favourites.

Full of vintage charm, with memorabilia salvaged from Devon’s various antique stores, the restaurant plays homage to the 1920s and also reflects both Rob and James’ obsession with modern history. James adds: “Both Rob and I are history buffs and it’s been great to inject some character into the building.” Having had only 12 days to turn the old premises into their vison before opening as Circa 1924, the duo are really pleased with how the change of décor has been received.

In their early 20s, the young entrepreneurs have worked hard to realise their restaurant dream and their drive and enthusiasm is evident at Circa 1924.

Rob states: “We are committed to making this a successful, thriving restaurant and bar for years to come and are determined to make Circa 1924 the place to eat and drink in Exeter.”
